Intervention Process
The TPAs are an embedded requirement within our capstone field seminars:
1. Student Teaching
a. Practicum (EDU 6080 / 6180): TPA 1
b. Student Teaching (EDU 6091 / 6191): TPAs 2,3, and 4
2. Standard Intern
a. Semester 1 (EDU 6095 / 6195): TPAs 1 and 2
b. Semester 2 (EDU 6096 / 6196): TPAs 3 and 4
3. ECO Intern
a. Semester 1 (EDU 6097 / 6197): TPAs 1 and 2
b. Semester 2 (EDU 6098 / 6198): TPAs 3 and 4.
It is essential to successful and informed program progress and completion that credential Candidates receive prompt feedback on their performance on the California Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA). Such will better prepare them to do well on successive TPA Tasks as responses required are progressively more extensive in scope with each Task. Passing TPA scores required for program completion and related course credit (see above): “3” or “4.”
TPAs are scored within two (2) weeks of the Task due date, and all students are notified of scores within three (3) weeks of the Task due date.
Therefore, at the first scoring of a TPA Task that is assessed as score level “1” or “2,” the TPA document along with the Record of Evidence (ROE) prepared by the assessor is submitted to the Alliant Lead Assessor, e.g. Dr. Reeves-Gutierrez. The Lead Assessor reviews and rescores the TPA. Should the review process reveal that the Candidate’s score reflects a “3” or a “4,” documentation is noted in the Record of Evidence; the TPA Task along with the new Record of Evidence are forwarded to Dr. Sophia Huang, and the student is notified of the score revision.
Should review reveal that the Candidate’s initial score of “1” or “2” is accurate, the Lead Assessor prepares an intervention plan targeting the Candidate’s areas of weakness. The Lead Assessor then contacts the Candidate and arrangement is made to review the TPA together. Interventions can take place over the telephone or in person. Targeted areas of weakness on the TPA Task are discussed extensively with the Candidate and all questions posed by the Candidate are addressed during the intervention process.
During the intervention process the Candidate is responsible to take notes regarding areas of weakness including the need for clarity, elaboration, and any sections of the Task wherein the Candidate’s response may be missing. At the conclusion of the intervention a timeframe is developed for re-submittal of the amended TPA Task (generally no longer than one week). The Candidate sends the amended TPA Task to the Lead Assessor for a final review. Once received the Lead Assessor reviews the amended TPA Task, prepares the Record of Evidence, and both are forwarded to Dr. Huang who issues an official letter of revised score report to the student.
Students who are unable to “pass” (a score of “3” or “4”) a TPA are referred to the Student Evaluation and Review Committee (SERC) for the committee’s evaluation of their program continuation.
